Ancient House Museum of Thetford Life, Gressenhall Farm and Workshop, Norfolk Museum Service, and Historic England are delighted to invite teachers and trainee teachers from your school to a free continuing professional development (CPD) session. Sessions will explore ways of using local heritage in the classroom to inspire learning across the curriculum.

The first meeting of 2024 will be on Friday 26 January 2024 at Ancient House Museum of Thetford Life:

  • Ancient House Museum is happy to welcome you and there will be an opportunity to explore and experience some of the fantastic workshops they can offer your students. There will also be an opportunity to share ideas about developing local heritage in the curriculum across all Key Stages and ideas for using artefacts to inspire curiosity and questioning. All sessions will be practical and interactive and focused on generating exciting enquiries that link to your curriculum in KS1, KS2 and KS3, with links to history, geography, RE, literacy/English and art as well as citizenship, British values and SMSC.
  • We will also take you on a Heritage Trail, a journey through time to discover Thetford's story from Vikings to revolutionaries to Dad's Army.
  • Lunch and refreshments will be provided as will a new publication on Viking Thetford, and a pack of historic maps and aerial photos of Thetford.
  • There will be practical, hands-on sessions looking at how historic maps and aerial photographs can provide a starting point for any local study. We will show you how to trace change over time, develop chronological understanding and. link across your curriculum to inspire real and relevant learning experiences for your students. Everyone attending will receive a teaching pack of maps and photos of Ipswich; find out how to gain a Heritage Schools Award and discover more free resources available online from Historic England and other Heritage organisations.
  • Plus an opportunity to find out about the Environmental Hub at Gressenhall and how your pupils can get involved.

Historic England's Heritage Schools programme offers support to all state schools and academies and can help you replicate all of this for the area around your school.

Heritage Schools is also offering a contribution (up to £130) towards covering costs for one teacher from your school to attend this CPD event.
